KING'S GARDENS (KONGENS HAVE)
A peaceful park favored by Copenhageners, home to several statues, including one by Viggo Hørup (1841-1902).
It's Copenhageners' favorite park, where they come to soak up the sun as soon as it appears. It's the most central and, above all, the most peaceful! In winter, you can take your dog for a walk; in summer, you can study on the benches that punctuate the long alleys of lime trees; and you can play boules all year round! On certain evenings, you can listen to live bands or sip a hot or cold drink, while children enjoy the puppet shows. A number of statues grace the site. Among the most noteworthy is the tribute to the politician Viggo Hørup (1841-1902) by J. F. Willumsen. This proud mustachioed politician was a leader of the Venstre party (then left-wing, as its name suggests) and founder (in 1884) of the daily newspaper Politiken.
For the record, Christian IV dreamed of a garden at the foot of his summer residence. The year was 1606. His gardener Otto Heider fulfilled his wish, and it was a success. The garden was opened to the public at the end of the 18thcentury . More recently, in 2001, a large-scale operation undertaken by a professional gardeners' association to celebrate Queen Margrethe's 60th birthday saw the garden remodelled according to the original Renaissance plans. Rose beds(Rosa gallica, Rosa mundi, Rosa centifolia, Rosa toscana, etc.) and 140 apple trees were planted.
From the central avenue, take time to admire the view of Rosenborg Castle.
