ØRESTAD NORTH
Site to discover spectacular buildings: the DR-Byen, the DR-Koncerthus, the 8Tallet or Grand Huit, the VM Mountain...
Ørestad, once known as Fisherman's Island, benefited from the Danish government's greatest urban planning challenge at the turn of the millennium. A futuristic city emerged from the land, challenging the world's most daring architecture firms, some of them 100% Danish! A futuristic city that combines modernity and eco-compatibility.
As soon as you step out of the DR-Byen metro station, bounded by a brick statue-wall (a monument by Per Kirkeby), two large buildings rise up on either side of the Emil Holms Kanal. On the right, the DR-Byen headquarters of the national radio station, designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen and the Dissing+Weiting agency. Across the canal, the DR-Koncerthus (concert hall) by French architect Jean Nouvel. You have to step into the foyer (open Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm) to truly appreciate the originality of this asymmetrical, undulating building.
Another spectacular building is Le 8Tallet or Grand Huit, nicknamed the "Serpent". This huge, angular building spans the "landscaped canal", with its main buildings linked by spectacular porticoes winding like snakes. VM Mountain, by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. With its ship's bow balconies, it is reminiscent of a Lego assembly. The Tietgenkollegiet student residence. For its circular shape, Lundgaard & Tranberg drew inspiration from the hakka tulou, adobe buildings from southeast China. Here, 360 student rooms are spread over eight floors.
