DONWAHI FOUNDATION
Artistic, cultural and educational foundation paying tribute to Charles Bauza Donwahi through his contemporary creations.
This structure dedicated to contemporary creation hosts exhibitions, artist residencies and cultural events. It's one of the largest and most interesting in Abidjan, with a cool bar serving excellent cocktails and a few dishes on the slate. The foundation was created in 2008, as a tribute to Charles Bauza Donwahi (1926-1997), a former minister of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, patron and enlightened promoter of the arts and culture, which he saw as vectors of sharing and tolerance.
The Donwahi Foundation is a delight to visit. It comprises three villas whose clean, minimalist lines evoke the avant-garde aesthetics of the 1970s. An architectural ensemble nestled in a vast green setting, worthy of a David Hockney painting. The gallery regularly exhibits works by Ivorian photographer Ananias Léki Dago and Cameroonian photographer Samuel Fosso, as well as works by contemporary artists such as Ivorian sculptor Jems Koko Bi and many other collections.
The foundation showcases both established and emerging artists, installations and performances, youth workshops and artist residencies. It's also a wonderfully tranquil space, where you can sip a coffee in the garden cafeteria or work; or sip a cocktail in the elegant lounge bar, on the terrace or in the library, where art books are on display, some of them for sale. Open late evenings.
