THE TITHE BARN
Barn which is part of a set of rural buildings restored between 1986 and 1988 under the aegis of Louis Hughes in Ouistreham.
In the heart of the ancient part of the village, between the church and town hall, the Grange at the Tithes is part of a beautiful set of restored rural buildings between 1986 and 1988 under the aegis of Louis Hughes, an Ouistrehamais architect. This barn, which was first mentioned in 1257, was left to abandon during the war and then rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries to resume its functions. Until the Revolution, Ouistreham was an ecclesiastical, legal, and tax dependency of the Abbaye aux Dames de Caen, whose Abbess received the Tithe - tax in kind, representing about one-tenth of the harvests, peaches, and herds - stored in the barn for that purpose. It retained its barn functions in the service of an individual until the early 1970s when it was acquired by the City prior to being registered as a Historical Monument on October 11, 1971. La Grange at the Tithes is now a meeting place for cultural and social life. It also offers a dream decor for private receptions (weddings).
