LA PIGNA
Historical center of San Remo called the Pigna because of its shape.
The historic center of San Remo is called the Pigna (which means "pine cone") because of its elongated and internally tortuous shape that wraps around the hill. This medieval quarter was built in concentric rings to make it inaccessible to the attacks of the pirates and Saracens who terrorized the coast during their frequent incursions. Lose yourself in its narrow streets to discover the church of San Sebastiano, the Piazzetta dei Dolori or the Casa Manara where Pope Paul III and Napoleon stayed.
