FORTEZZA PRIAMAR
Imposing fortress and emblem of Savona, transformed into prison in 1830.
This imposing fortress, emblem of Savona, stands on the site of the first Savonian settlement, destroyed in 1528 by the rival Genoa. In place of this small "acropolis", which included palaces and even a cathedral, a powerful military bastion was built (1542) with two squares and the Loggia Palace (1417), the only one to have survived the destruction. In 1830 the fortress was transformed into a prison and it was here that the patriot Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) conceived the political association for Italian unity, the Giovine Italia.
