TORRE LEON PANCALDO
Small tower decorated with the statue of the Virgin of Mercy in Savona.
This small14th-century tower was built in memory of the navigator from Saven, a companion of Magellan, who died in 1537 at the Rio della Plata. Decorated by the statue of the Virgin of Mercy, it stands opposite the Old Dock and just at the beginning of Via Paleocapa, one of the city's liveliest districts, which was completely restored in 2001. Colloquially called Torretta by Savona's inhabitants, it was once part of the city walls. Its silhouette has been adopted as a symbol of the town.
