PINACOTECA CIVICA / MUSEO DELLA CERAMICA
Picture Gallery and Ceramic Museum in the Palazzo Gavotti.
One of the richest collections of paintings and art objects in Liguria, exhibited within the framework of the 16th-century Palazzo Gavotti and its neighbor, the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, founded in 1479 and refurbished in 2014. The visit is divided into two parts: the Pinacoteca Civica and the Ceramic Museum.
Pinacoteca Civica. A chronological tour runs through 22 rooms where pieces from the 13th century to the present day are on display. The works of the Renaissance and some sculptures of the Quattrocento, including the marvellous bas-relief of the Madonna and Child and a large carved wooden Crucifix, are worth a look. A special room is dedicated to the Crucifixion by Donato De Bardi, painted between 1430 and 1440, a masterpiece that represents a real artistic turning point for the period, witnessing the syncretism between the dramatic pictorial style of Northern Europe and the more expressive Italian style. The palace houses the paintings of the Milena Milan Foundation for Contemporary Art, with works by Magritte, Miró, Picasso, De Chirico, Hundertwasser...
Museum of Ceramics. Inaugurated in 2014 in the former Palace of the Mont de Piété, this avant-garde museum exhibits more than a thousand pieces representative of the secular craft tradition typical of the Savona area. The exhibition is divided into four levels, divided into different sections in chronological and thematic order. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of blue and white medicine jars (16th-17th centuries).
