VIA PIA
Main axis of medieval Savona, an example of Renaissance architecture in Liguria.
Narrow and crowded with ancient shops, Via Pia was the main thoroughfare of medieval Savona. As a sign of authority, all the town's influential families owned a palace on this street. Among the most beautiful palaces on this winding thoroughfare is the Palazzo della Rovere atno. 28. Commissioned by Giuliano della Rovere (the future Pope Julius II) in 1495 to Giuliano da Sangallo, it is a unique example of Renaissance architecture in Liguria. It retains only the façade columns of the original structure, as it was never completed.
