SOCIETÀ AUTOSTRADE
Autostrade per l'Italia, a company majority owned by Atlantia, a holding company controlled by the Benetton family, manages nearly 3,000 kilometres of expressways in Italy. In 2018, she was accused of not having carried out enough security checks on the Morandi Bridge, whose arch collapsed causing the deaths of 43 people. According to a report (August 2018), 98% of the investments made to strengthen the bridge since 1982 were made before the privatisation of Autostrade in 1999. The company rejected these claims, arguing that not all the light had been shed on the causes of the collapse of the viaduct and the conditions under which it occurred. It considers these accusations to be "mere hypotheses that have yet to be verified". The judicial inquiry should determine the real responsibilities.
