BASILICA DI SAN SIRO
Genoa's first Christian cathedral, located in the Maddalena district.
In the Maddalena district, the first Christian cathedral of Genoa, this church dates back to the time of the first Christians. It is said that in the 4th century, Bishop Siro defied the basilisk, the legendary monstrous lizard that terrorized the population. It was remodeled several times, including by the architect Carlo Barabino in 1821, to whom we owe the neoclassical exterior. In sharp contrast, its extremely rich interior is one of the most beautiful testimonies of the Genoese baroque. Frescoes, stuccos and statues cover every millimeter of the building.
