PALAZZO BIANCO
Via Garibaldi hosts the extraordinary museographic tour of the three palaces: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi.
In the elegant setting of a 16th-century palace (remodeled in the 18th century) with a courtyard garden, the Pinacoteca illustrates the development of figurative painting in Genoa in the 16th and 17th centuries. The most famous Genoese painters are on show, along with Flemish primitives and the great Italian, French and Spanish masters.
The tour opens with Luca Cambiaso's Madonna with Candle, followed by most of the Genoese school. The other rooms, dedicated to Italian painting, include canvases by Veronese, Palma the Younger, Procaccini and Caravaggio's extraordinary Ecce Homo. On the mezzanine floor, there's an exhibition of period clothes, accessories and lingerie, illustrating the evolution of women's fashion from the 17th to the 20th century (note the incredible collection of antique embroidery).
The second floor picks up with painting, featuring Florentine Mannerism; notable works include a Saint Sebastian among the Saints by Filippino Lippi and an altarpiece by Bernardo Strozzi. Once through the grand reception room - the centerpiece of the Palazzo Bianco - the visit continues with the Flemish paintings. Not to be missed are Memling's surprising Christ bénissant, Rubens' version of Mars and Venus and Van Dyck's Christ à la monnaie.
Finally, an entire room is devoted to Spanish Baroque painting, with solemn, haughty representations by Murillo(Flight into Egypt) and Ribera(Saint Francis).
