PALAZZO ROSSO
Unusual palace expressing the wealth and influence of the Brignole-Sale family.
Palazzo Rosso expresses the wealth and influence of the Brignole-Sale family, who initiated its construction between 1671 and 1677. Architecturally, its red stone façade is richly decorated with pediments, volutes, pilasters and lion masks... Inside, the 39 rooms, almost all decorated with frescoes, offer a vast panorama of the Genoese( Bernardo Strozzi'sThe Cook ), Venetian( Veronese'sJudith with the Head of Holofernes ), emilian(Death of Cleopatra by Le Guerchin), Flemish (portraits of the Brignole-Sale family by Van Dyck and Christ Carrying the Cross by the same artist, as well as Averkamp's meticulous village scenes) and Spanish schools from the 13thto 17thcenturies . An important collection of Chinese porcelain and French earthenware, while most of the furniture comes from the Hôtel Matignon in Paris, then owned by the Duchess of Galliera. Finally, don't miss a visit to the4th-floor apartment of Caterina Marcenaro, one of the first curators and directors of the three museums in the post-war period. The furniture, typical of the 1950s-1960s, lends a retro, original feel to the place. The rooms, with their uncluttered design, are nonetheless adorned with rich furnishings and dozens of books... An unusual place that's well worth a visit. Don't leave the beautiful palazzo without taking the panoramic elevator up to the sixth floor, where you can enjoy a unique view of the city from the belvedere.
