ALBERGO DEI POVERI
An imposing complex that was commissioned by Emanuele Brignole in 1652
This imposing complex was commissioned by Emanuele Brignole in 1652 to house the city's indigent. Among the first Italian structures designed for this purpose, the building resembles a palace rather than a hospice. The building was remodeled several times until 1835. Today, the Auberge des Pauvres is partly a retirement home, while two wings are reserved for the faculty of political science. Some of the rooms are open to the public, where one can discover baroque paintings and beautiful antique furniture.
