PALAZZO DELL' UNIVERSITÀ
A stone's throw from Palazzo Reale, in the middle of Via Balbi and its palaces, here is the seat of the prestigious university of Genoa. At the entrance to the faculty, there are many students, who for some come from a further distance… This is the case for young French following the Erasmus programme. The origins of Palazzo dell'Università date back to 1623, when the Jesuits, with the help of Stefano Balbi, could establish one of their colleges in a palace. Around 1651, the project to welcome a place to know in the heart of Via Balbi materialized and gradually what was once a Jesuit college transformed into a flourishing university.
From an architectural point of view, the palace illustrates the neoclassical style of the th century, with its orderly facade where the symmetry and regular decorative elements are to be advocated (columns, high windows, bent or triangular pediments). The interior opens onto a marble staircase of the two majestic lions, and then on a courtyard with some kind of patio.
