PALAZZO SAN GIORGIO
Palace built in 1260 housing the offices of the Port Authorities in Genoa.
In the heart of the old port of Genoa, the beautiful frescoes on the façade inevitably draw the eye to this beautiful old palace. Built in 1260, it was the seat of the Banco San Giorgio, one of the first banking institutions in the Italian township. It later became a customs house and now houses the offices of the Port Authorities. Marco Polo, a prisoner of the Republic of Genoa, dictated his travel memoirs here. The 16th century exterior frescoes, painted by Lazzaro Tavarone, were renovated to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.
