DUCAL PALAZZO - TORRE GRIMALDINA
Renaissance-style palace hosting temporary exhibitions, symposiums and conferences.
Built between 1591 and 1620 by the architect Andrea Cerasola, this imposing Renaissance-style palace was severely damaged by fire in 1777, particularly in the central part, the Salons des Conseils Majeur and Mineur, and by French bombardment from Louis XIV's fleet. Perfectly restored, its current structure features an elegant neoclassical façade. Formerly the Palace of the Republic, it was home to the Doges of Genoa. A beautiful Doge's Chapel can still be visited upstairs. Inside, the vast covered atrium is flanked by two arcaded courtyards.
All year round, the Palazzo Ducale hosts top-quality temporary exhibitions, symposia and conferences, evening shows and concerts, and is home to the Museo del Jazz G. Dagnino, the Maison de la Poésie, and organizes events on the roof terrace or in the basement, in the former cistern...
The Torre Grimaldina: a real curiosity of the Palazzo Ducale, it can be reached by elevator or stairs from the west hall. Recognizable by its singular architecture (topped with battlements), this is Genoa's former prison, in operation until 1930! A visit to the dungeons and cells is rich in history, as evidenced by the many inscriptions and graffiti on the walls. From the top of the tower, there's a magnificent view of the city.
