CASA DI COLOMBO
The Casa di Colombo is a unique testimony of medieval architecture.
Throughout the nineteenth century, many historians have questioned the presumed location of the childhood home of the famous navigator. At the dawn of the 20th century, the area around Piazza Dante underwent massive urban restructuring, giving rise to the monumental avenues (via XX Settembre) that we know today, which does not make it easy to find the hypothetical birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Nevertheless, some clues remain. In the 15th century, this neighborhood, populated mostly by artisans, was the home of Domenico Colombe (the father), who worked as a wool carder. Even today we can see his workshop, which differs from the rest of the private house, located on the first floor. Little Christophe would have lived there until he was 9 years old. During restoration work in the year 2000, foundations from the Roman period were found on the first floor. In the center of the house, one can see a courtyard and a basin for collecting rainwater. Although narrow, the small house fascinates its visitor... It doesn't really matter what is true or false, as long as there are stories to tell...
Just up the street stands the Porta Soprana, erected with the nearby walls between 1155 and 1159, to defend Genoa from possible attacks by Barbarossa. It is a unique testimony of medieval architecture. Flanked by two twin towers, once the main entrance to Genoa, it now delimits the old town.
