GALATA - MUSEO DEL MARE
Testimony to the link between Genoa and the sea, the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean dedicated to the history of navigation.
The largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean basin, this truly fascinating museum traces the maritime history of the port and the city. The building housing the museum is the last of those that formed the arsenal of the galleys of the Genoese Republic.
Over five floors, visitors are treated to an extraordinary reconstruction of port life from its origins to the present day, including the installation of the arsenal, the dockside armory, an account of Christopher Columbus and his adventure, the arrival of cargoes from the Americas, and the spectacular reconstruction of a real17th-century 40 m galleon. There's also a fully reconstructed shipyard with real machinery, an exhibition of maritime charts and a rich collection of antique navigational instruments.
The heart of the visit is the section dedicated to emigration, particularly that of the many Italians who left for the Americas from the port of Genoa in the early 20th century. The interactive, immersive tour puts visitors in the shoes of an emigrant, with simulated liner journeys, customs clearance, etc., and ends with a reflection on the current situation of migrants and their difficult integration.
Since 2009, the museum has been home to the Nazario Sauro military submarine (1976). This is the first example of a submarine to be visible in the sea. Self-guided tour (audioguide in French), very instructive on the living conditions of submariners. The top floor features a panoramic terrace with a superb view of the city.
