GALLERIA NAZIONALE DI PALAZZO SPINOLA
Building of Mannerist architecture preserving true masterpieces in Genoa.
A must-see, this is one of Genoa's most beautiful palaces (14th-18th centuries), housing the collections of the Genoese families who lived here (the Pallavicino, Doria, Spinola and Grimaldi families, who were merchants and even bankers to King Charles V). The building's Mannerist architecture includes some real masterpieces and a precious Galerie des Glaces on the second floor, decorated with frescoes by Lorenzo de Ferrari. A Resurrection by Tintoretto opens the tour on the second floor, followed by Antoon Van Dyck's Portrait of Ansaldo Pallavicino and Bernardo Strozzi's Portrait of a Monarch. An even richer repertoire awaits visitors on the second floor, with The Four Evangelists again by Van Dyck,Sacred Love and Profane Love by Guido Reni and a Last Supper by Giulio Cesare Procaccini. On the third floor, the GALLERIA NAZIONALE della Liguria houses works outside the original collections. There is a room dedicated to Peter Paul Rubens - notably the imposing Portrait of Giovanni Carlo Doria, the doge's son - and the exceptional Ecce Homo by Antonello da Messina. A few sculptures by John of Bologna and a Justice by Giovanni Pisano complete the ensemble. An elevator provides access to the panoramic terrace on the top floor, an extraordinary hanging garden overlooking the rooftops of Genoa. A visit that takes you back in time to discover what palace life was like during the golden century of the Republic of Genoa.
