March 19 is the feast day of La Spezia's patron saint, St. Joseph. He has been venerated for a very long time, at least since the 17th century. Nowadays, on the weekend closest to this date, a major festival is held in the city, with both religious and secular celebrations, including a fair and a variety of stalls all over the city, in the beautiful squares, along the quays, in the gardens... The festival is very popular, attracting many visitors from the surrounding area and sometimes even further afield...
