MUSEO AMEDEO LIA
A museum with a labyrinthine layout that preserves a very rich private collection.
Housed in the former 17th-century Paolotti convent, this labyrinthine museum was inaugurated in 1996. The large building, with its many wings and outbuildings, houses a very rich private collection belonging to the engineer Amedeo Lia, as well as an archaeological collection from around the Mediterranean. On three floors, the works are presented in a fascinating itinerary. Throughout the 13 rooms, where the guards spontaneously guide you (so as not to get lost!), you will discover Mr. Lia's donation, covering a period from the 13th to the 18th century, starting with a group of religious works of art, continuing with sculptures from Roman times and the Middle Ages, and ending with one of the richest collections of paintings in the region. Liturgical pieces and works, sculptures and paintings, decorative arts by Italian and foreign artists, medieval ivories, stained glass, illuminations, medals, sculpted rock crystals, Renaissance bronzes, Venetian blown glass and more. Among the paintings are major works such as a Nativity by Giovanni Bellini, a Portrait of a Gentleman by Titian and Pontormo'sSelf-Portrait, the museum's centerpiece. There are also vedute by Canaletto, Caravaggesque canvases and works by Tuscan primitives. On the top floor, glassware, majolica and still lifes. A fascinating visit and a real source of pride for the city.
