A huge torchlit procession every year in Portovenere in memory of the miracle that saved the town from the plague in the Middle Ages.

It is said that an ancient discolored parchment, bearing the image of the Virgin and Child, saved Portovenere from the plague in 1399 by miraculously regaining its colors. The portrait is still on display in the village church, San Lorenzo. To celebrate this miracle, every year on August 17, a huge torchlight procession is organized by the inhabitants, which creates an absolutely magical atmosphere in the Gulf of the Poets at nightfall...
