TOUR DE L'ILE DE PALMARIA
Starting from Terrizzo (the northern point where the water cabs arrive from Portovenere), the trail runs for 9 km, without too much change in altitude and with a few shaded picnic areas. Follow the "Giro dell'Isola" signs along the way. After walking along the seafront to Punta della Scola, climb up to Forte Umberto I, an imposing late 19th-century military building. From the terrace, you can enjoy an unrivalled view across the gulf from La Spezia to Versilia. Halfway up the hill, you'll come across a number of paths leading down to the sea, but you'll have to climb another 600 m before you're ready for a swim. The profile of the island of Tino reveals itself on the horizon, while below you, at last, the beautiful coves of Pozzale, to the south of the island. The path then begins to descend sharply. Continue towards Capo dell'Isola, the point at the southern end of Palmaria. Time to catch your breath and you're back on the climb, this time to the summit, 186 m high. Here, white rocks plunge sheer into the blue sea. Don't miss the Semaforo, a former military battery now transformed into a center for environmental studies and a botanical garden. Return to the starting point at Terrizzo via a steep descent that requires a final effort; the reward is an unforgettable view of the historic town of Portovenere right in front of you.
