CHIESA DI SAN LORENZO DI PORTOVENERE
Building built by the Genoese in the twelfth century as an official basilica.
Built by the Genoese in the 12th century as an official basilica, the building was erected by the Antelami workshop of sculptors and architects. It underwent several alterations. The church preserves the image of the White Madonna, protector of the city. According to legend, she miraculously arrived in Portovenere in a tree trunk and saved the town from a plague epidemic in 1339. Every year on August 17, a religious procession and festivities commemorate this event.
