GROTTA DELL'ARPAIA
Go there and contact
Grotto also called Byron's cave, offering an enchanting atmosphere and a sublime view in Portovenere.
The grotto, also known as "Byron's grotto", is reached by descending the sloping staircase to the left of San Pietro. Its nickname comes from an inscription recalling that from here the English poet Lord Byron dived to undertake a courageous swim around the gulf between Portovenere and San Terenzo, west of Lerici. He liked to go here to meditate, in the peace and quiet and far from everything. The atmosphere of the grotto is captivating, and the view sublime, especially at sunset. The only drawback is the crowds of visitors in summer...
