The island is very popular in summer for swimming in its exceptionally clear waters.

Opposite Portovenere, the island of Palmaria is very popular in summer for swimming in its exceptionally transparent waters. You can also go hiking and visit the two caves - Grotta Azzurra, which opens in the cliff on the west side of the island, and Grotta dei Colombi, on the south side, at 30 m above sea level - as well as the two 19th century military batteries. The beautiful beach of Pozzale, made of sand and pebbles, is often crowded and is a pleasant place to stop for a swim in summer.
