PIEVE DI SANT'ANDREA
The oldest church in Sarzana with an impressive stone façade.
Sant'Andrea is the oldest church in Sarzana, dating back to the 10th century (the word pieve means a very old church). Remodeled in 1330 and in 1579, the building has lost its Romanesque characteristics, but it still has an impressive stone façade. The most obvious addition is the beautiful portal with caryatids on the façade, clearly taken from a 16th century civil residence, and surmounted by an eight-pointed star, the sidus, symbol of the elders of Sarzana. Inside there is a baptistery and a furnace for the production of bells.
