Famous path entirely dug in the rock, connecting Manarola to Riomaggiore.

This famous path, dug entirely out of the rock, links Manarola to Riomaggiore, overlooking the sea (2 km). It dates back to the 1920s-1930s, when work was carried out to reinforce the railroad, and workers cut new paths away from the villages to set up explosive powder depots. Three of them were killed. Before the railway was built, Manarola and Riomaggiore were linked only by a rough, steep path through the vineyards. Called Strada Nuova (New Street), it takes its name from an inscription on a stone left by a young lover. During the Second World War, young people from both villages would meet here for their trysts. So don't be surprised to find hundreds of padlocks hanging from the railings along this now legendary promenade. You can see some of them in Riomaggiore, at the trailhead. The almost flat trail passes through a variety of landscapes, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. The trail is not very long (1 km) and takes around 30 minutes to complete. It's a pleasure to sit on the benches lining the trail and enjoy it to the full!

But be careful! In 2012, a landslide closed the trail. Safety work is currently underway, and the Via dell'Amore is not scheduled to be fully reopened until July 2024. At the time of writing, around 170 m of the path from Manarola can be walked for €5.
