Inaugurated in 1678 as the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo, the Malibran began life as an opera house, before diversifying into comedy under Carlo Goldoni from 1730 onwards. Since 1837, it has honored the famous Spanish singer Maria Malibran. In 1996, the theater became a Venetian hangout during the restoration of La Fenice, which had been ravaged by fire. The Malibran retains remarkable period decorations and hosts classical music concerts and plays, perpetuating Venice's cultural heritage.
