In honour of the patron saint, surrounded by the festivities, the men offer a rosebud to their beautiful one.
While the national holiday is celebrated all over Italy (Liberation Day), in Venice you can admire the gondola races, eat riso e bisi (a pea risotto) and offer a red rose to your sweetheart... A picturesque tradition that evokes the bud that Tancredi, a knight who died in battle during the Venetian campaigns in the 11th century, is said to have brought to Maria, the doge's daughter, as a sign of his love. In despair, the girl was found dead the next day, with the bud stained with her lover's blood on her heart.
