A procession crosses the floating bridge over the Giudecca canal to the church of the Redentore. Fireworks.
Crossing the floating bridges between San Marco and the island of Giudecca on the occasion of the favorite festival of the Venetians is a unique experience. For 400 years, the inhabitants have participated in this pilgrimage that leads them to the Church of the Redeemer. The purpose of the pilgrimage is to thank the heavens for saving the city from a plague epidemic that killed thousands in 1575-1576. During the Festa del Redentore, people ward off the bad luck by praying but also by tasting good wine, bovoeti, and by attending spectacular fireworks.
