CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA DEI MIRACOLI
Church with unitary style architecture, the most beautiful in Venice.
The most attractive Venetian church is also the only one that can boast a unitary style of architecture, having undergone - a rare occurrence in Venice - no subsequent modifications. Situated on the edge of a very small river, with its square, it forms one of the most surprising architectural ensembles in Venice. A masterpiece by Pietro Lombardo with the help of his two sons, Tulio and Antonio, its late 15th century Renaissance style gives it the appearance of a sculpted jewelry box. Its polychrome marble facade (recovered at the end of the San Marco work) is adorned with a curvilinear pediment and two orders of carved Ionic columns, reminiscent of the Florentine Renaissance style. The entrance portal is framed by two pilasters with Renaissance decoration, and surmounted at the tympanum by a Virgin and Child. The small but harmoniously proportioned single nave interior is also decorated with polychrome marbles in shades of pink, grey and white, which accentuate this jewellery box effect. The altar is adorned with the Virgin and Child (apparently miraculous) by Nicolò di Pietro (1409). The barrel vault, made of carved wooden panels, carries 50 coffers painted with the effigies of the prophets and patriarchs. A raised carved wooden choir enriches the main entrance. It was here that the sisters of the adjacent former convent attended Mass. Santa Maria dei Miracoli is very popular among Venetians, who often choose it to celebrate weddings.
