CHIESA DI SAN POLO
A church with a Romanesque bell tower, remarkable paintings and various works of art in Venice.
Built in 937 and remodeled in the 15th and 19th centuries, San Polo has preserved its Gothic portal, rose window and wooden ceiling. Not to be missed are the 14 paintings of the Via Crucis by Tiepolo, a Last Supper by Tintoretto and works by Veronese and Palma il Giovane. The Romanesque bell tower was built in 1362. Notice the two carved lions above the entrance door. One of them is holding a man's head between its paws. This would be a reference to the doge Marino Faliero, condemned and beheaded in 1354 for having made a pact with Genoa.
