CHIESA DELLA MADONNA DELL'ORTO
An elegant church, one of the most beautiful in Venice, with remarkable paintings.
This elegant red brick and white marble church is considered one of the most beautiful in Venice. Built in the 15th century and originally dedicated to St. Christopher, it was later dedicated to a statue of the Madonna and Child, believed to be miraculous, found not far away in a vegetable garden(orto in Italian). You can see it in the San Mauro chapel. Its facade facing the canal is a perfect photograph of the passage from Romanesque to Gothic. The dome dates back to 1503. Once you have passed through the portal of the church, you will discover three large naves in which are conserved paintings by Tintoretto (1518-1594): a splendid Universal Judgment and TheAdoration of the Golden Calf, a painting in which the painter invited himself to embody the man who carries the calf, thefourth character from the left. Note that the tomb of this great artist lies in the first chapel on the right, near the main altar. In this church you can also admire other works, such as the Presentation of Mary in the Temple (dated 1552), visible on the door to the San Mauro chapel, or the Miracle of Saint Agnes, exhibited in the fourth chapel on the left. A painting by Cima da Conegliano depicting St. John the Baptist adorns the first altar in the left nave, while in the Valier Chapel, located in the same sector, a photo replaces a Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini, which was stolen in 1993.
