A remarkable building, hosting the great luxury houses, a few steps from the Rialto Bridge in Venice.
Dating back to the 13th century, it served as a trading post for merchants from the German Empire, encompassing northern Europe. Like other Venetian fondachi, it played a crucial role in the city's economic development, acting both as a meeting point for merchants and a storage center for goods. The Fondaco dei Tedeschi was the largest and one of the most profitable in the city. Its architecture reflects this function while incorporating classical Venetian elements.
After a fire in the early 16th century, the building was rebuilt in two years. Its facade on the Grand Canal was adorned with frescoes by Giorgione and Titian, now lost.
From 1870 to 2008, it also housed Venice's Central Post Office.
Since 2016, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi has regained its commercial vocation by becoming a 7,000 m² department store, managed by DFS, a subsidiary of LVMH. Architects Rem Koolhaas and Jamie Fobert have preserved the building's heritage while adding a contemporary touch.
This superb square-plan building rises over three floors, opening onto almost 200 spaces around an inner courtyard with a well. Here you'll find top luxury brands, from fashion to spirits, jewelry to cosmetics, as well as Italian handicrafts.
A Michelin-starred restaurant is located in the courtyard, while a gallery on the fourth floor presents art exhibitions. Finally, the rooftop terrace offers a magical view of the city (reservation required).

Enorme plus de cet édifice incontournable lors de votre séjour à Venise, son toit terrasse.
Celui-ci vous permettra d'avoir une vue panoramique sur le centre de Venise et l'accès est gratuit.
L'entrée est gratuite puisqu'il s'agit d'un centre commercial regroupant sur trois étages des boutiques de luxe.
L'édifice avait été occupé auparavant par la poste italienne.
Quand vous arrivez au niveau de la cour intérieure, les arcades situées à chacun des trois niveaux offrent une vue splendide.
Tout est disposé avec beaucoup de goût et de raffinement.
Mon seul regret est de n'avoir pas pu accéder à la terrasse qui offre une vue d'ensemble spectaculaire sur Venise.
