TEATRO LA FENICE
For opera lovers, but not only. Between velvet and stucco, this legendary theatre has many stories to tell.
One of the most beautiful opera stages in the world! It was in this splendid Venetian opera house, once called Opera San Fantìn after the campo where it is located, that Verdi created Rigoletto in 1851 and La Traviata. It was also here that Visconti filmed the opening scene of Senso in 1954. Maria Callas, aged just 24, made her debut here with a memorable interpretation of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, which opened the door to her success. Unfortunately, in 1996, arson ravaged the building. It took eight years to rebuild it exactly as it was, according to the foundation's motto: dov'era e com'era (as it was and where it was). The restoration, though faithful to the original, provoked fierce controversy over the methods and costs involved.
On December 14, 2003, when it reopened, iconic figures such as Riccardo Muti and Elton John took to the stage for a week of concerts. Despite exceptional acoustics and the reconstitution of the frescoes in the dressing rooms, many spectators regret the patina of the old theater. The latter, built in 1836, was itself a replica of the former, which burned down in 1792; the phoenix is thus eternally reborn from its ashes. Today, the opera house boasts 174 boxes and 1,100 seats in an oval auditorium of rare elegance. The decor harmoniously blends gold and red, in the pure Baroque tradition of the 18th century. On the ceiling, an enchanting blue sky is punctuated by clouds, while musical cherubs seem to soar towards infinity.
