PALAZZO GRASSI
Palace located on the left bank of the Grand Canal housing the Pinault collection with modern and contemporary art.
Palazzo Grassi, on the right bank of the Grand Canal, faces Ca' Rezzonico. Built by Giorgio Massari between 1748 and 1766, the palace recently benefited from a minimalist renovation by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. In April 2005, French businessman François Pinault acquired the property from the Agnelli Group, with the aim of transforming it into a center for modern contemporary art, offering the public access to his personal collection. The collection, comprising over 3,000 works, reflects the diversity of modern and contemporary art, including pop art, arte povera, minimalism and abstraction.
Among the most renowned artists in the collection are Mondrian, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Rothko, De Kooning, Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman. The works on display blend harmoniously with the architecture of Palazzo Grassi.
The Palazzo Grassi is the Pinault Collection's first site in Venice, the second being the Punta della Dogana, which François Pinault acquired for a 30-year concession in 2007.
Just behind the Palazzo is the Teatrino Grassi, opened in 2013 and also restored by Tadao Ando. This rectangular building, with its majestic volumes, covers more than 1,000 m². Today, it hosts cultural events, temporary exhibitions, workshops (children are welcome), audiovisual projections, ballets and concerts in a hall renowned for its exceptional acoustics.
