COLUMN OF SAN MARCO E SAN TEODORO
Two tall granite columns once marked the entrance to the city.
Dating from 1172, these two imposing granite columns symbolize Venice. One is surmounted by the lion of Saint Mark, the city's patron saint since 828, and the other by Saint Todaro (Theodore), Venice's first patron saint, slaying a dragon. Brought back from Constantinople as war booty, they marked the entrance to the city. Legend has it that there were originally three, but one fell into the basin of St. Mark's during transport and was never recovered.
