Marble bridge and white stone of Istria: the sighs were those of the future prisoners of the prisons on the other side of the channel.

Forget the romantic clichés associated with the Bridge of Sighs. It evokes a far more tragic reality... The sighs in question are those of the condemned prisoners taken to the prisons of the Doge's Palace. Built in 1602 by Antonio da Ponte, this Baroque structure of marble and white Istrian stone is distinguished by its two separate gangways and finely chiselled barred windows. Although it offers a view of the lagoon, it is above all a symbol of the last vision of the prisoners before their imprisonment, a reminder of the impossibility of escaping their sad fate.
