BUILDING UP
Fourth bridge over the Grand Canal designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, connecting the Santa Lucia station and Piazzale Roma.
The Pont de la Constitution, the fourth bridge to span the Grand Canal, provoked considerable controversy during its construction. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls in 1999, it was inaugurated in autumn 2008. Approximately 90 metres long, it links the Santa Lucia central station with the Piazzale Roma bus station in just a few minutes' walk. However, its lack of railings and bold design are not suited to Venice. The glass panels, often damaged by luggage, become slippery under the city's humidity.
