SQUERO DI SAN TROVASO
A curious wooden hut in Venice, one of the last gondola yards in the world.
This wooden hut with its sloping roof is home to one of the last gondola yards, known as squero, a term that originates from squaro, an ancient tool used in boat building. Every year, the gondoliers come here to rid their gondolas of algae and give them a protective coat of tar. More than just a maintenance workshop, this squero is one of the few places where the secret of gondola manufacture lives on, with its unique asymmetrical shape that allows gondoliers to sail using just one oar.
