SCUOLA GRANDE DI SAN GIOVANNI EVANGELISTA
Fourteenth-century scuola with Gothic capitals depicting members of the brotherhood, the Atrium, the Holy Cross Chapel.
The Scuola San Giovanni Evangelista was founded by a religious brotherhood at the end of the 14th century and was located in the heart of Venice. With the growth of the Serenissima, a vast complex of beautifully decorated buildings developed. From that time onwards, this complex served as a privileged setting for classical concerts. Pietro Lombardo designed the masterly portal arch (1481) in front of the building itself, as if it were an iconostasis or narthex. The arch and the wall that border it allow access to a courtyard and then to the Scuola itself. Note the Gothic capitals on the first floor (14th century) which depict members of the brotherhood. Mauro Condussi built the double-flight staircase that leads to the chapter house, as well as the twin windows. Several renowned painters contributed to the decoration of the complex, with the theme "the miracles of the relics of the Holy Cross in Venice": Vittore Carpaccio, Gentille Bellini, Titian, and later Giandomenico Tiepolo. Take a walk through the beautiful rooms, the Atrium, the San Giovanni Room, the Holy Cross Chapel. The second floor was transformed by Giorgio Massari, with its oval windows and its salon that evokes an opera set. Come and see Verdi's La Traviata or Puccini's La Tosca, but also, as in the beginning of the place, many concerts organized by the Center for French Romantic Music of the Palazzetto Bru Zane.
