SAINT-GATIEN FOREST
The largest forest in Calvados (3,500 ha) can be explored via a 9 km trail, accessible outside the hunting season.
Calvados, a land of bocages par excellence, has few forests. Among the rare but beautiful forests to be discovered is that of Saint-Gatien. For many years, it was exploited by lumberjacks, half-cultivators, half "woodmen" who, with the help of their small horses, transported logs. Monsieur Verron, the last lumberjack in Saint-Gatien, died in 1971. Today, the largest forest in Calvados, covering 3,500 ha and largely privately owned, can be explored along a 9 km path starting from the town hall.
