NELAHOZEVES CASTLE AND COLLECTIONS (ZÁMEK)
This square yet "light" castle was built by Florian Gryspek of Griesbach between 1553 and 1558. It is one of the first Renaissance buildings in the country. During the Thirty Years' War, it was occupied and the interior was modified, but the Renaissance style remained. Since then, it has never been transformed and is therefore offered to us almost intact. The Arcades room, the dining room and its glassware or the Knights' room with its 16th century sandstone fireplace and its decorated ceiling are particularly appreciated. In the 1990s, Nelahozeves was returned to the Lobkowicz family of Roudnice (owner since 1623), who exhibited a large number of paintings from their personal collection. The place became one of the most important private museums in Europe. Thousands of works from the Renaissance to the 1930s were collected by this family and are partly on display to the public.
We will see the famous painting by Bruegel, The Harvest. But also Veronese, Rubens, Velazquez, Bellotto, to name a few. The collection of 17th century Spanish portraits is the most important outside Spain. Also on display are sacred objects (including a 16th-century altarpiece), ceramics, manuscripts, furniture, weapons and photographs. In the music room, old instruments, original scores, Beethoven's manuscripts and other evidence of this family's interest in composers are on display.
