CIMITERO DI SAN MICHELE
Cemetery of the Venetians since 1804 with a church with a white Istrian stone façade at the entrance.
This cemetery, located off the Fondamenta Nuove, occupies the whole of an islet and is both a spiritual and cultural walk, where you can stroll among the cypress trees near the tombs of Ezra Pound, Diaghilev and Stravinsky. At the entrance, the church of San Michele, designed by Mauro Codussi between 1469 and 1478, stands with its façade of white Istrian stone, one of the first Renaissance churches in Venice. Part of the cemetery has been redeveloped by American architect David Chipperfield, combining modernity with respect for heritage.
