San Lazzaro degli Armeni, a haven of peace favoured by Lord Byron and other men of letters, is home to a community of Armenian monks and a library of 150,000 ancient books, including precious illuminations. Unique in the world, its 18th-century printing works stand alongside a rich picture library and the Mechitarist Museum, which exhibits Armenian, Greek and Indian archaeological artefacts. Before leaving the island, stroll through the cloister and gardens, where fragrant rosebushes bloom in season. The monastery is accessible by guided tour only.
