CHIESA DI SANTA CORONA
Works of great value in one of the most beautiful churches of Vicenza.
One of the most beautiful churches in the city, surrounded by a garden overlooking Corso Palladio. Erected in 1261 to house the relic of the Holy Thorn offered by the French king St. Louis, this building preserves two true masterpieces: The Baptism of Christ by Giovanni Bellini and The Adoration of the Magi by Veronese. Observe their sparkling colors (red, yellow, green), notice the skillful draperies and the fineness of the fabrics. Also note that a figure stands in the center of this gallery. Dressed in blue and holding a green cushion topped with a jeweled crown, he seems to be staring at us.
Meanwhile, to the left of the nave stands the tomb of the poet Luigi da Porto, the writer behind the legend of Romeo and Juliet . Then we go to the choir, which houses a monumental altar in colored marble. The wooden stalls at the back of the apse forming the main chapel are also noteworthy. The other chapels are also worth visiting. The Cappella Thiene is illuminated by frescoes made by Michelino da Besozzo in the 15th century. The Cappella Valmarana, located in the crypt, pays tribute to the genius of Palladio. It is one of the few religious works created by the architect outside of Venice. Finally, on your way out, don't miss the amazing Cappella del Rosario by the Albanese brothers, whose vaults are entirely covered with painted panels.
