CHIESA DI SANTA CORONA
Works of great value in one of the most beautiful churches of Vicenza.
One of the city's most beautiful churches, surrounded by a garden overlooking Corso Palladio. Erected in 1261 to house the relic of the Holy Thorn donated by the French king Saint Louis, this building houses two true masterpieces: The Baptism of Christ by Giovanni Bellini and The Adoration of the Magi by Veronese. Observe their sparkling colors (red, yellow, green), the skill of the draperies and the finesse of the fabrics. Note also that a figure stands at the center of this gallery. Dressed in blue and holding a green cushion topped with a jeweled crown, he seems to be staring at us.
Meanwhile, to the left of the nave stands the tomb of the poet Luigi da Porto, the writer behind the legend of Romeo and Juliet. We then head for the choir, which houses a monumental altar in coloured marble. Also of note are the wooden stalls at the rear of the apse forming the main chapel. The other chapels are also worth a visit. Cappella Thiene is illuminated by 15th-century frescoes by Michelino da Besozzo. Cappella Valmarana, located in the crypt, pays tribute to the genius of Palladio. It is one of the architect's few religious works outside Venice. Finally, on your way out, don't miss the surprising Cappella del Rosario by the Albanese brothers, whose vaults are entirely covered with painted panels.
