VILLA LA ROTONDA
Visit this villa and admire its facades with Ionic columns supporting pediments.
One of the most emblematic creations of Palladio was realized between 1566 and 1571. It expresses, par excellence, the application of humanist and neoplatonic theories, of balance and beauty, of harmony and integration with nature through its architecture. In short, all the ideals of the Renaissance are concentrated in this villa. The taste of the antique, with its facades with Ionic columns supporting pediments. The taste of arithmetic, with its centered and symmetrical composition. The perfection of the universe, with its interlocking circular (the universe) and square (the earth) volumes. The villa surmounted by a dome is articulated around a central rotunda with four resolutely identical facades, each overlooking one of the four cardinal points. This place built on a hill has always enchanted: the director Joseph Losey directed his Don Giovanni here in 1979, while Goethe, two centuries earlier, evoked it in his Italian Travels. The only drawback of the Rotonda, say the purists, is its interior decoration. Palladio, in fact, died before the completion of the villa, and the furnishings that can be seen today were created by his successors. The paintings and stuccos selected have a heavy appearance, which seems to contradict what the architect from Vicenza would have wanted, as he was in favor of white and sober decorations, both inside and out, in order to favor the purity of lines.
