VILLA VALMARANA AI NANI
A villa built in 1688 by Francesco Muttoni, part of the must-see of Vicenza.
Among the must-see buildings in Vicenza, this villa is not by Palladio. It was built in 1688 by Francesco Muttoni and decorated by Giambattista Tiepolo (author of the decoration of the palazzina, the main body) and his son Giandomenico (working mainly in the foresteria) in 1757, and it was admired by Goethe in his time. Some frescoes, full of freshness and bright colors, are a surprising picture of life in Veneto in the eighteenth century, such as the scenes of the carnival or those dedicated to the country life. The illustration of the Mondo Novo, which the artist would later take over at Villa Zianigo, where a string of characters turn their backs to the viewer in a multitude of attitudes, is magnificent. Other scenes, with grandiose scenography, such as the famous Sacrifice of Iphigenia, illustrate episodes from The Odyssey and The Aeneid, or scenes from epic poems such as Ludovico Ariosto's Roland Furieux and Torquato Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered. The villa owes its name to the dwarfs (about fifteen of them) that adorn its wall. According to another legend, its name comes from the fact that the daughter of a nobleman from Vicenza was locked up there. As the girl did not grow up, her father thought he could hide her illness by making her live in a world decorated with dwarfs. Unfortunately, one day, while looking beyond the enclosures, the girl saw a handsome knight and, upon discovering her infirmity, she killed herself by throwing herself into the void.

The legend of the dwarfs that distinguish our villa from the other ones belonging to the Valmarana family is a pleasant one to discover…
You perfectly described the difference of style and use of colours between father and son: our villa is unique in Veneto for the possibility it gives to closely compare them.
We hope to see you soon again in our villa!
